I like it when you reveal a bit over time. It's fun...exciting and something I can look forward to getting. :0)
I've been watching Clay's video's from BeerCityBoardGames (Grand Rapids, Michigan) for over a year now, and I love how passionate he is about the gaming industry, how he makes it a family friendly environment, his VLOG's for his trips to conventions in the US, his video's on gaming terminologies/mechanics etc etc. He also just reached a milestone of 500 subscribers, so I think he'd be a worthy content creator you might consider, if you haven't done previously.
It’s been awhile since i missed a live cast, I’m taking an intro accounting for small business intensive, super cool. How about “it’s clobbering time!” “There’s a rock in the way… … it’s clobbering time!”
"Clobber" is a nice strong verb. :)
Little Big Thumbs Foster the Meeple The Board Game Garden Actualol
Thanks! We've featured most of those, but I'll take a look at Little Big Thumbs.
For channels to feature, I'm thinking about: - Liege of Games - Room and Board
I would like to recommend Bones Collector for your auction. I love the content
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll check them out.
Thinker/Themer is a an option for your charity auction. They have great gaming content!
Thanks! We featured them in the auction when they were just starting out. :)
Thanks for the tip with the rule books.
8:40 I really liked Medium's intro/theme song. We never skipped it.
Dang that's two weeks I miss this! Been busier on Wednesdays now :/ Great listening and reading on what's upcoming for SM.
Thanks Julio!

Thanks for sharing this list! I'm familiar with some, but a few of these are new to me.
Another good vid! I love listening to you talk about the people you work with. It reminds me of my current employer. I hope that I can one day offer opportunity and security to people in the future in the form of a job. (Also, my heart breaks every time you say you have less interest in dueling games. Though, we intend to send you a copy anyway, haha. As a thank you, not a pitch) When you say no Action Checklist, do you feel that there is a number of actions where it is reasonable to expect people to remember? That is where I am at currently with the 5 options available to our players.
Great question! I would recommend not asking players to remember anything; instead, build the actions into the user interface. Here's a video on the topic: ua-cam.com/video/Uca3LzGMe1Q/v-deo.htmlsi=ZKLcMVVNcLmewTdJ
@@jameystegmaier Another great video. It struck fear into my soul when it was first posted. I just re-watched it and I think I may have a decent improvement. The Action Economy is pretty hard baked into our arena style skirmisher(I want to promote it so bad but won't.) I think a track where players can mark what they have done will solve the main issue that we've had. The core mechanics are simple enough that even a mother daughter duo who were completely new to the hobby were able to pick it up after just a few rounds. The issue we ran into was people forgetting if they had done an action or if it was one they can repeat. I think a track will solve that. (The mother/daughter duo actually chose to playtest our fighting game for their first board game experience ever and the daughter had an absolute blast beating her mom. That was by far the most rewarding playtest we had that weekend.)
@@Oviedo_Games That's great to hear how easy your game is to pick up. Easy to learn, difficult to master is always great. I hope the track works out!
What about Gnarly Carly gaming? Not sure if she has done it yet for the charity drive.
We have indeed featured her a few years ago. :)
@@jameystegmaier cool. I was introduced to her only a short while ago. Thanks for the quick reply. Keep up the great positive example and impact on the happy. I am stoked for Redux.
Thanks for the shout out!
Some of the advanced gearlocs actually rely heavily on rolling bones and using backup plan abilities. Polaris comes to mind immediately as one with massive reliance on rolling bones. Pretty amazing how tactical the game can be on such a small grid. Also amazing how many totally unique characters they have managed to create within this system. Base game of TMB is just a taste though, the expansion gearlocs and batttles are so much more dynamic. The game really starts to shine with undertow and ramps up even more with unbreakable. Just a few thoughts on one of my all time favorite games.
Meepology? :)
+1 for Totally Tabled as for the year long announcement of Rolling realms. I like knowing when things are coming and the blogs about them. I do find that I don't fully read every one though
Thanks for your recommendation and input!
Cardboard Time is a great podcast that deserves some attention. Arwen's reviews are always insightful and interesting, and she goes out of her way to conduct interviews with folks in the industry that I'd likely otherwise not know about. She's also a fierce member of/advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. Definitely worth a listen/consideration for the auction!
Thanks for the recommendation!
Have you included Jason Perez of Shelf Stories in your charity auction before? He does such important work initiating the equity conversations that our hobby needs - and he had a really tough experience this year with the publisher withholding credit for his work on the re-themeing of Puerto Rico 1897.
Jason is great! I'm 99% sure I've featured him, but I'll check just in case.
There's a lot to love with Too Many Bones. My favorite Baddie keyword is Detonate "At end of Movement Phase, if this unit is at less than full HP, it will defeat itself deal # True Dmg to each adjacent unit". Also, love Engulf. "All Dmg rolled by this unit also hits all adjacent units to target (including self) as well as triggers reaction Skills, if applicable" It's so much fun to position the Baddies in a way that they take themselves out.
Great video, I must admit most of it went over my head as I'm just starting out on game designing. I was planning on a little what you can do on your turn card, but now I'm considering other options like including the options on the character board. So thank you for the great advice. I must admit I'm working on my first game idea currently, in my head it's ground breaking and revolutionary and will take the board gaming world by storm, but from watching your videos, imagination may disappear in reality 😂
Thanks for your comment! I should clarify that reference cards are super helpful in any game. But when possible, looking for creative ways to showcase actions in the user interface of the game is great in addition to reference cards. I hope you have fun with your design! :)
War Chest is another game that makes great use of poker chips: draw them from a bag, play them face up or face down in front of you to issue commands or recruit, place them on the board as units, stack them when you bolster a unit. Drawing poker chips or other large tactile tokens from a bag is always fun.
I agree!
I will say that image shown doesn't do the deluxe "Sundrop" buildings justice. The tiniest details in those models really shine. A beautiful game I'd love to get to the table more (like every game)!
Yep I love Isle of Skye, and own no expansions. My go to over Guild of Merchant explore is Blue Lagoon. Jusylt prefer it, I know they are different, but like the simplicity.
I had to look back to rediscover‘scouting’ I’d completely forgotten it was a thing all characters could do! I want to get this to the table again soon! Love this game!
Can't wait for Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the 2nd Era also known as Too Many Bones v2.0!!!
This is one of my favorite games of all time! I’m surprised you didn’t mention the spotlight of the game, the dice! I’ve never seen anything quite like it here where each skill you learn is just another dice that provides a cool ability once per combat. Super tactical despite being very luck based with the dice.
You know, I like that mechanism in theory, but in our game we very rarely added more dice, so the additional dice had minimal impact.
@@jameystegmaierit’s worth trying again with the skill dice as that’s where I think a lot of the fun and variety comes from. Also some of the baddies specially make it difficult when you rely just on the base stats and rolling normal attack/defense dice which makes you really embrace the branching skill trees of each different gearloc.
Yes I agree with the last comment- the skill dice provide an enormous wealth and depth for each character- so that you may play with the same character multiple times and vary the dice (and therefore the skill sets) you accumulate each time. I love this game- played it a chunk of times a few years ago and this has whet my appetite to get back into the game!
Well it really depends on the iteration of content, early content(base game) favored the stats while later content makes it almost impossible without balance of stats and skills
Fun video!
Great discussion about great game. Production value is really high for this one, tactile experience is great, only other game in my collection giving me this my pleasure to move things around is Tapestry. Regarding favourite mechanism, I think using unique dice for skills is really clever.
I haven't played but too many bones blew me away when I first saw it last year at Gen Con. I don't know that I've seen any other game produced to that high quality across all components
That’s kind of Chip Theory Games’ (the publisher)’s schtick. Everything is wildly well produced. Very cool company!
What a great topic and a great guest. Thank you both for sharing this video.
Thank you!
We played a couple of Expeditions now with the max player capacity. I think its around 8 times now. And the same feedback always come up every game. "Scarcity in Corruption Tiles on higher player count. Power and Guile lost its value at the later stages of the game. Made the game lengthy that shouldn't supposed to be." So what we did on our last game, we implemented a "Conflict Mechanism" just like in Scythe. We used the Battle Wheels. Comparing and using upto 7 Power to push away or defend your location. Ties wins the attacker as always. Losing the battle will retreat the Mech upto the base or he can place it hexes near depending on the Guiles used upto 3. Winner will able to steal 1 unplayed card from the opponent(excluding the starting cards) or 1 worker as his reward. It really changed the game and made the game even more interactive but also made it more lengthy. This was just a fan-made rule from our group just spice things up a little and address our some concerns. Hope this expansion addresses our main concerns: - I think the starting Mech Mat would jump start the game and will make the first option of exploration be viable. - The Corrupted Mech would be an additional Corruption points and will be using the Power and Guile more. But based on this video it looks like it is easier to Vanquish than the Corruption Tiles.
I'm curious to hear your thoughts after you play the expansion! :)
Just saw someone post about this game on a gaming group. Now I have to check it out. Also, I love the Howler t-shirt.
I'm 2 hours north of Sydney, so +1 for Sydney!
Harmonies is another one. The bits you use for one pattern can be used in another, as long as the6 don't have a cube on them.
I agree! I played Harmonies and Waffle Time at the same convention recently and enjoyed both. :)
Only 14.0 for me. Did much better in the other two rounds this game
Thanks for playing!
Can you use an already marked shape by using a 6 in A Feast for Odin?
Dang, You must have foreseen my question! Thanks for answering it months before it was asked! 😂
Also, I ended with a 17.8! I had so many pumpkins I felt so powerful!! Thanks again for doing these.
Would you consider flagging in the title if the video is about a digital game? I watch all your videos about tabletop games but I am not part of the digital game hobby.
Sure! Is it clearer now? Also, the yellow banner is what I use to help differentiate the digital game videos.
@@jameystegmaier Thanks - I appreciate the clarity.
I haven't played Harmonies but it's reminding me a little bit of a print & play game called "Floodlands". Floodlands is not 3-dimensional like Harmonies, but you can score combos with overlapping features. For example, if two Mills are next to the SAME field, BOTH Mills will score from that one field. It feels satisfying to score in this way.
Thanks, Helen! I backed Floodlands and need to play it. :)
At first blush, this reminds me of Myst, which was a revolutionary exploration puzzle game many years ago. The original version wasn't even a first-person 3D experience but a slideshow using beautifully rendered art. Maybe the most similar board game would be T.I.M.E. Stories? Players each go to locations in the past and review the room or environment looking for clues they can share to solve the game's puzzles. If they fail, they have to try again. I really like that game and you have me very interested in Blue Prince now. As of this morning, the demo is still available and there's no release date yet.
Definitely, the first-person perspective with puzzles and a reason to look around is reiminscent of Myst and TIME Stories.
That sounds really interesting. At first I was thinking it would be a cool tabletop game but the room integration would. You would almost need a bag of tiles to draw from and place three out and they would have to be two sided with the 1st person perspective on the other side (but it would be small) or you would have to have a set of cardboard pictures associated with each room to look at. But then the puzzles would have to be their own little element and you'd have to have different versions so you don't just memorize them. I wonder if you could just have a bunch of different questions you would answer that would make you look at each picture differently and maybe randomly roll a dice to decide what you have to do each time you get into each room.
Triple Town for mobile uses the merge-3 mechanic which does a similar thing, where completing one goal is a stage in another goal. Three adjacent grasses merge into a bush, and consolidate onto the piece that was put down last. Three bushes merge into a tree, and so on. The constraints are that you have limited space, and also that you don't know what piece you'll be putting down next. You can store one piece to swap later for your current piece, but otherwise you have to make do. I really enjoy the spatial puzzle of trying to arrange the things I work on so that they'll merge into advantageous places, and also the hard compromises that such planning forces you to make. I'd strongly recommend taking five minutes to check it out if you're not familiar with it. Very clean presentation, charming aesthetic, and simple, compelling gameplay.
I appreciate the reminder! It's been a while since I last played Tiny Towns, but I really enjoy it!
@@jameystegmaier I think your comment wound up in the wrong spot (or maybe a typo) but just to be clear, Triple Town is a digital game, and different from the board game Tiny Towns (which was called out by @TheMagzim and also uses the merge mechanism)
@@hpshovecraft Sorry, that was a typo. I've played both Triple Town and Tiny Town. :)
This is a brilliant interview and chat. Yes small goal regret ai will look into this book.
Tiny Towns is famous for having this kind of mechanic. Love that game.
Where to visit. Given that I have visited both, courtesy of a WestPac ship deployment with the US Navy, I think I'd pick Australia. Our ship visited Perth/Freemantle on the other coast of Australia in between two long stints in the Indian Ocean (circa 1981), so the sights in Syndney would be new to me and I'm sure a lot has changed in the intervening 40 years. Both Australia and Singapore were interesting and there's a lot to see/do in both. I don't think you'd be disappointed in either. Enjoy, whatever your choice.
Thanks for sharing your perspective on this, Greg. I was in Sydney for a week around 20 years ago and had a great time.
Your breadth and depth of production knowledge never ceases to amaze me, thank you or sharing! The rule book segment in particular intrigued me, and my curiosity in writing a rule book is getting the better of me. I've heard you mention something of a formula you have for Stonemaier books, but I'd love to know more. I haven't come across any videos of yours focusing on dos/don'ts etc, interesting things, or "best ofs" for rulebooks specifically. Might be a dry subject for some, but could be an interesting rabbit hole others.
Thanks for asking! Check out the articles under "Level Up Your Design Skills" on this page (multiple links at "How to Write a Rulebook (also this and this and this and this and this)"): stonemaiergames.com/kickstarter/how-to-design-a-tabletop-game/
Man, on paper, I'm not sure if this game is for me, but everyone speaks so highly of it--I really want to give it a try!
I think it's a good one to try at a convention before buying. While it isn't a game I need to own for repeated plays, it was a lot of fun to play at Geekway to the West.
@@jameystegmaier Seems like it might also be a very "group dependent" game...
I like that it forces a timer on how long the game can last after a player is eliminated. In a 3-4 player game, you can use an endless number of road tiles. However, once a player is eliminated, the furthest road tile in play becomes the finish line.
I’m a bit biased Jamey, but if you end up making a trip to Australia, then I think my home town of Melbourne would be a better choice 🤪🤪😃😃😆😆 We have a healthy rivalry with Sydney over which city is the best, and we do have a great gaming community here too. I also went to Singapore when I was a kid back in the 70’s but I’ve heard it’s amazing now too.
Thanks Stuart! For this particularly trip I don't have that choice, but I'd love to visit other parts of Australia someday (including Melbourne).
